How do you deal with your dog and the Christmas Tree?

  • Posted on January 4, 2012 at 1:41 am

I’m a little worried about my dog. I don’t care that he sniffs the tree, but I’m concerned that he might knock off an ornament and then there is a metal hook on the ground for him to step on or get stuck in his mouth. How do you deal with this? Are there hooks that are plastic or rubber that won’t hurt dogs?

How do you prevent corrosion to these metals?

  • Posted on August 31, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Here is a list of 20 metals and their uses,
I have a posted a question in connection with this assignment

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ahz6nAU4YEYIfmkMbUxqjB_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091016022154AAr4hA5

It includes the full assignment…

But could you please tell me the best suited way of preventing corrosion for each metal.

1.Lead->Flashings/roof coverings
2.Copper->Plumbing/roofs/decoration
3.Zinc->Flashing substitute
4.Silver->Cutlery/ jewelery
5.Gold->Jewelery/finery
6.Brass ->Ornaments/decoration/screws
7.Bronze->Ditto
8.Aluminum->Cans/foil/lightweight parts
9.Pewter->Tankards/plates/ornaments
10.Mild steel->Screws/hinges
11.Alloy steel->Springs/chisels/saws.
12.Stainless Steel->Kitchen/car/decoration.
13.Aluminum alloy->Frames/kettles
14.Nickel silver->Knives/trays etc
15.Wrought iron->Gates/chains/fences
16.Cast Iron->Boilers/gutters/fire grates
17.Zinc plate->Screws/nails/rust proofing
18.Copper plate->Base for Chromium plating
19.Chromium plate->Trimmings e.g. knobs/handles
20.Silver/Gold plate->Jewelery etc.
Remember the 4 types of preventing corossion, that I have to work with are :

-> PAINT OR GREASE
-> PLASTIC
->CHRONIUM PLATING
-> GALVANISING
Remember to consider, that the metals I have given here have not had any sort of polish, etc to prevent corrosion. PLEASE USE THE METHODS I HAVE SUPPLIED to answer the question (which is best suited for each metal)

Chemistry Metals and Non-metals worksheet doubts?

  • Posted on August 12, 2011 at 6:21 am

I didn’t get the answers for some, please help.
1: A metal is found in liquid state in nature .It is less reactive than hydrogen .It occurs as sulphide ore .Describe the reactions how can we extract this metal from its ore .Name the ore also.
2: Explain why
(i)Aluminium cannot be extracted by reducing alumina with carbon.
(ii)Concentrated HNO3 can be stored in aluminium containers.
(iii)Aluminium is used for making transmission wires.
(iii) 24 carat gold cannot be used for making ornaments.
3: An alkali metal A gives a compound B (molecular mass=40) on reacting with water .The compound B gives a soluble compound C on treatment with aluminium oxide. Identify A, B, and C and give the reaction involved.
4: A metal M does not liberate hydrogen from acids but reacts with oxygen to give a black colour product. Identify M and black coloured product and also explain the reaction of M with oxygen.
5: Given below are the steps for extraction of copper from its ore .Write the reaction involved
(i)Roasting of copper (1) sulphide.
(ii)Reduction of copper (1) oxide with copper (1) sulphide.
(iii)Draw a neat and well labelled diagram for electrolytic refining of copper.
6: An element A burns with golden flame in air .It reacts with another element B, atomic number 17 to give a product C .An aqueous solution of product C on electrolysis gives a compound D and liberates hydrogen .Identify A, B, C and D. Also write down the equations for the reactions involved.
7: A metal which is used in thermite process, when heated with oxygen gives an oxide B, which is amphoteric in nature .Identify the metal and its ore and give the reaction involved.
8: Give reasons
(i)Copper is used to make hot water tanks but steel is not.
(ii)Tarnished copper vessels being cleaned with lemon or tamarind juice.
(iii)Metal sulphides occur mainly in rocks but metal halides occur mostly in sea and lake waters.

Can I send this in a paper envelope?

  • Posted on July 21, 2011 at 8:51 pm

It’s a metal star ornament. It’s pretty light, but you can tell the envelope isn’t a feather with it added (there’s a lot of other paper in the envelope).

Also – I wanted to know because I’m sending it from the US to the UK. Would putting the star in there be acceptable?

Yes, I would go to the post office to get it weighed/stamped.

I know not much about mailing, so please have a whack at this question ; )
What is a meter in mail terms?
Oh – is it like a printer that postmarks it? *googled for pictures*

Idea's on how I can properly mourn?

  • Posted on June 30, 2011 at 11:07 pm

I know to some of you this may seem like a daft thing to be really upset about.
In September 2010 our family labrodor Barney passed away of natural causes. He was truly the best dog anyone could have ever wished for! We rescued him from an abusive home when he was only 9 months old, we had him for 12 years. I was about 5 when we got him and still clearly remember the events of that day, my Father told me Mother he was going out to get a lottery ticket ( my Mother doesn’t like dogs) and came home with the biggest dog I had ever seen.
He was such a big softy, he would sulk if he accidentaly killed a moth, would play fight and nibble your arm gently then lick it thinking he hurt you, he would lay next to me in bed during my time of depression when I would spend most nights crying, didn’t flinch if the Chinchilla jumped on his head, and would happily watch my baby sister crawling around and act like a very caring brother when she would grab his face and eyes. I’ve never met such a good dog, especialy not one abused the way he was. He was neglected so bad that he would have fits if he so much as needed the toilet too bad and wasn’t let out in time, or if he hurt himself running around.
My parents garden isn’t closed off from the main road, in his older years he was so loyal we could put him out into the garden in the morning, no need to leash him up, go to work/school, and when we came home he was still outside in the garden where we left him (‘:
He died in the garden in his favourite spot under the trees. I had moved out from my parents home when he passed so I wasn’t there when it happened, though my mother and sister were.
My Father brought me up for the burial. I was distraut, everyone went to him and said their goodbyes except me, I could not face it.
I regret it so much! I never got the chance to tell him how much I loved him, and give him one last scratch behind the ear.
I want to be able to let go of this regret as it kills me! He wasn’t a dog to me, he was more of a brother! He can never be replaced.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I might let go of my grief? A way I can say my goodbyes? We do have a grave for him in the garden, where we have planted flowers that will bloom every autumn, an ornament of a labrador, his food bowl, and my sister found a small metal box and placed a lock of his hair in it.
I’m not the type to be able to go to his grave and cry or say anything. Can anyone think of a more personal and discreet way I can say my final goodbye?
Praying may be a good idea, however in no way at all am I relgious
